What is truth? – Pontius Pilate (John 18:38)

Pilate asked Jesus, (37) Art thou a king then? Jesus answered, Thou sayest that I am a king. To this end was I born, and for this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth. Every one that is of the truth heareth my voice. To that statement Pontius Pilate replied,

 What is truth?

Webster defines truthconformity to fact or reality; exact accordance with that which is, or has been, or shall be. Strong’s simply defines truth as verity and verity is a word that brings morality into the conversation as Webster calls it moral truth; agreement of the words with the thoughts.

That is the reason that “the truth” is a moral obligation and responsibility for everyone, because in the reality of truth our words cannot be separated from our hearts intentions, or it is not truth.

Jesus reveals to Pilate His very purpose for coming into the world, that He should bear witness unto the truth. Jesus fulfills as truth a 700 year old prophecy of Isaiah 61 concerning Himself when He walks into a Nazareth synagogue and reads the account from the book. Luke 4:18,19 reports, The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised, To preach the acceptable year of the Lord. Jesus then sat down and said, This day is this scripture fulfilled in your ears. Matthew 4:23 says that Jesus went throughout all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom and healing every disease and every affliction among the people. In John 14:6, Jesus reveals Himself something of His glory to us, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me. Jesus overwhelmingly bear[s] witness unto the truth and proves that He is the Messiah.

Then Jesus says, “Every one that is of the truth heareth my voice”The absolute crucial thing for all people is to be certain that we are included in that group of people that Jesus identifies as being of the truth. To be “of something” Strong’s helps us to see that this means to be ‘out of’, ‘out from’, or ‘by the means of’, the point where action or motion proceeds. Therefore, those that are of the truth” are the ones that we could say have come forth out of or from Jesus. To say it another way, they have been ‘born again and made alive in Christ’ and now their life proceeds forth out from Christ Jesus Himself (see 1 Cor 6:19). We (all people) come into this world shapen (born) in iniquity (Ps 51:5) because we came forth from Adam, who sinned and through whom death entered the world. Jesus, The Truth, says we must be born again. He says more directly, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God (John 3:5). The apostle Paul says of this group of people, And you hath he [Jesus] quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins (Eph 2:1).

And Jesus says everyone that is of the truth heareth my [His] voice and that My sheep hear my voice, and I know themand they follow me: And I give unto them eternal life (John 10:27,28).
