A Scripture Study of the Holy Ghost

A BIBLE  STUDY

The following is a scripture study of the Holy Ghost.  Of course, such a brief document could never be close to exhaustive.  However, it will give us a basic Bible understanding of the ministry of the Spirit of God within the life of the believer.  I have emphasized some words and phrases to help with the study.  Some words that I want to stress and connect within the passages are in bold type.  The italicized words in brackets are
definitions and brief comments on the word or phrase immediately preceding them.


Nowhere in these passages (or in any other Bible passages) will you find the Holy Ghost moving people to perform some of the acts we witness today which are attributed to His unction.  However, you will find biblically legitimate demonstrations of divine integrity, power and character in those who live by them.  Hope you enjoy the study.  God bless.

THE HOLY GHOST IS


1            THE “HAGIOS PNEUMA,” THE “HOLY BREATH” OF GOD

Gen 2:7

7          And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.



John 20:22

22        And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and saith unto them, Receive ye the Holy Ghost:



2          THE MYSTERY CHRIST

Col 1:24-29

24        Who [Paul] now rejoice in my sufferings for you, and fill up that which is behind of the afflictions of Christ in my flesh for his body's sake, which is the church:

25        Whereof I am made a minister, according to the dispensation of God which is given to me for you, to fulfil the word of God;

26        Even the mystery which hath been hid from ages and from generations, but now is made manifest to his saints:

27        To whom God would make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles; which is Christ in you, the hope of glory:

28        Whom we preach, warning every man, and teaching every man in all wisdom; that we may present every man perfect in Christ Jesus:

29        Whereunto I also labour, striving according to his working, which worketh in me mightily.



3          A PARENT SPIRIT TO US

John 14:18

18        I will not leave you comfortless [gr. orphans]: I will come to you.



Rom 8:15

15        For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father.



4          THE FIRSTFRUITS OF THE SPIRIT, OUR FATHER’S SEAL (preservation; security; ownership; identification) UPON US AND THE EARNEST (the down payment) OF OUR FULL ADOPTION AND COMPLETE INHERITANCE

Rom 8:22-23

22        For we know that the whole creation groaneth and travaileth in pain together until now.

23        And not only they, but ourselves also, which have the firstfruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting for the adoption, to wit, the redemption of our body.



Eph 1:12-14

12        That we should be to the praise of his glory, who first trusted in Christ.

13        In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise,

14        Which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory.



2 Cor 1:21-22

21        Now he which stablisheth us with you in Christ, and hath anointed us, is God;

22        Who hath also sealed us, and given the earnest of the Spirit in our hearts.



2 Cor 5:4-5

4          For we that are in this tabernacle do groan, being burdened: not for that we would be unclothed, but clothed upon, that mortality might be swallowed up of life.

5          Now he that hath wrought us for the selfsame thing is God, who also hath given unto us the earnest of the Spirit.



5          THE WITNESS TO OUR SPIRIT OF OUR SONSHIP

Rom 8:16-17

16        The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God:

17        And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together.



6          OUR COMFORTER, THE SPIRIT OF TRUTH, OUR GUIDE INTO ALL TRUTH, AND IS PROPHETIC OF THINGS TO COME, ESPECIALLY IN THE NEXT AION (AGE)

John 14:16

16        And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter [one called alongside to help]; , that he may abide with you for ever;



John 16:13

13        Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.



1 Cor 2:9-10

9          But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him.

10        But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God.



7          OUR TEACHER OF THE THINGS GIVEN TO US OF GOD

1 Cor 2:12-13

12        Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God.

13        Which things also we speak, not in the words which man's wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth; comparing spiritual things with spiritual.



8          THE ONE WHO HELPS OUR INFIRMITIES THROUGH INTERCESSION FOR US

Rom 8:26-27

26        Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.

27        And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit, because he maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God.



9          THE ONE WHO MAKES ALIVE OUR MORTAL BODIES

Rom 8:9-11

9          But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.

10        And if Christ be in you, the body is dead because of sin; but the Spirit is life because of righteousness.

11        But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken [make alive] your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you.



10        THE ONE WHO HELPS US TO MORTIFY THE DEEDS OF OUR BODIES

Rom 8:12-13

12        Therefore, brethren, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live after the flesh.

13        For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live.



11        THE ONE WHO WILL REPROVE THE WORLD THROUGH US IN WHOM HE DWELLS AND WILL GLORIFY JESUS FROM WITHIN US

John 16:7-14

7          Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you.

8          And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment:

9          Of sin, because they believe not on me;

10        Of righteousness, because I go to my Father, and ye see me no more;

11        Of judgment, because the prince of this world is judged.

12        I have yet many things to say unto you, but ye cannot bear them now.

13        Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.

14        He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew it unto you.



12        THE ONE WHO WRITES UPON OUR LIVES NOT THE LAW OF SIN AND DEATH, BUT THE LAW OF THE SPIRIT OF LIFE IN CHRIST JESUS

Ezek 11:19-20

19        And I will give them one heart [corporately], and I will put a new spirit within you; and I will take the stony heart [law of sin and death] out of their flesh, and will give them an heart of flesh [law of the spirit of life]:

20        That they may walk in my statutes, and keep mine ordinances, and do them: and they shall be my people, and I will be their God.





Ezek 36:26-28

26        A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart [law of sin and death] out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh [law of the spirit of life].

27        And I will put my spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes, and ye shall keep my judgments, and do them.

28        And ye shall dwell in the land that I gave to your fathers; and ye shall be my people, and I will be your God.



2 Cor 3:3

3          Forasmuch as ye are manifestly declared to be the epistle of Christ ministered by us, written not with ink, but with the Spirit of the living God; not in tables of stone [law of sin and death], but in fleshy tables of the heart [law of the spirit of life].



Rom 8:2

2          For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death.



13        THE ONE WHO MANIFESTS HIMSELF IN GIFTINGS

1 Cor 12:7-11

7          But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal.

8          For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit;

9          To another faith by the same Spirit; to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit;

10        To another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues:

11        But all these worketh that one and the selfsame Spirit, dividing to every man severally as he will.
